Exclusive Harry Potter prize means world attention for Books Abroad

Enthusiasts from around the world are expected to vie for a unique complete set of Harry Potter books signed by author J.K. Rowling when bidding opens on internet auction site E-Bay from midnight on 24th September.

The set is one of the items secured by Books Abroad as they get ready to celebrate their 25th anniversary with a fund-raising ball later this month. No other complete set of signed Harry Potter books is available in the world at the moment.

Development Officer with Books Abroad, Claire Newman, explained how the exclusive arrangement came about. "Through her Huntly connections, J.K. Rowling knows of the work of Books Abroad. Although she cannot attend our 25th Anniversary Ball in person, she was very keen to support us. We are very grateful to her for this generous contribution to our fund-raising efforts."

Other authors backing the Rhynie-based charity with signed copies of their works include Ian Rankin, Alexander McCall-Smith, local author Stuart McBride and patron Mairi Hedderwick.

The 25th Anniversary Ball is being held on 29th September at The Exchange, Thainstone in Inverurie. A three course dinner will be followed by after-dinner speaker Steve Robertson, star of Scotland the What, dancing and an auction.  A number of tickets are still available from Books Abroad on 01464 861446.

Since 1982 Books Abroad have supplied nearly a staggering 2,000,000 good quality, second-hand books free of charge to schools, libraries and colleges in overseas countries where poverty makes such reading and educational resources difficult to acquire.  These donated books are of enormous value to children in struggling schools throughout the world and would otherwise end up in landfill sites.

The charity's volunteers meet at the Books Abroad warehouse in Rhynie on Mondays and Wednesdays to sort and pack books for dispatch and are keen to welcome any new volunteers.
