Ronald Center was a composer and teacher born in Aberdeen on 2nd April 1913. He lived in Huntly from 1943 until his death in 1973.
Music Centeral, named after him, is presenting three concerts to celebrate the centenary of his birth. On 2nd April a concert honoured ‘Center the Teacher’. On 16th November the Isla Quartet will give the first ever complete performance of Center’s String Quartet No 3, written in the 1960s, and a new quartet by local composer David Ward. In March 2014 there will a recital by mezzo Ella Fontaine and pianist Lauren Hibbard with some of Center’s art songs and Ward’s Rilke Sonnets alongside Center’s choral pieces sung by the Aurora Choir. A striking feature is the inclusion of short pieces written for each concert by young people.
